Adventure Travel – Paintball in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia
Undergrads@Adventure Travel - Paintball in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia
Xander Tan, an undergraduate from Singapore Management University’s SMUX, is a fun-loving person with a strong adventurous spirit. Some of the adrenaline- inducing activities he had tried include wind tunneling and waterfall abseiling. Here, we managed to invite Xander back again to talk about his paintball experience in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
Name: Xander Tan Zhi Kai
Nationality: Singaporean
University: Singapore Management University (Information Systems)
So Xander… Can you please share with us why you decided to try paintball?
Well that definitely would have to be the very nature of the team I am in. I am currently in the school club in my university – SMUX Xseed, which enables everyone and anyone to try out any kind of activities. Paintball was one of the very first activities I did with the team and ever since then, I have been doing it frequently.
How about some of the key safety tips you would tell a traveller who will be going Kuala Lumpur to play paintball?
Wear very thick clothing if you do not want to get bruises that can last as long as a month! I did paintball in Malaysia and the air guns there were very powerful. No matter how far the attacker is shooting from, once you get shot by the dreadful pellets, you will definitely want to curse and swear your heart’s out.
Oh my, it sounds painful! How about the top 5 must-bring items for your trip?
Well, besides the other basic essentials like your passport and all that stuff, I would recommend these 5 items for travellers to wear: T-shirt, long sleeve shirt, jacket, jeans and trackpants. As you can see, all these items are layered on a person. Do not be scared to wear multiple layers of clothes! Even though it may get very warm, it is definitely worth it, especially if you are a lady.
What is the most memorable event/instant from your trip?
That has to be the moment when I got ‘shot’ in the head. I did paintball several times, but the most lasting memory was also the most painful one – the “headshot”. I was taking cover behind a tree, when I came out to attack, a pellet landed right on my forehead. Orange paint splattered, I was called ‘dead’, and before I knew it, I started cursing loudly. (:
Would you encourage the other undergrads to try paintball? Why?
Definitely!! It allows you to experience the exhilarating adrenaline rush. The different kind of games and tactics you can play makes the game very interesting and exciting too. It is a very good activity to spend a good afternoon with a bunch of friends.
All right Xander, to round up this interview, can you share with us the most challenging obstacle that you faced during paintball?
I feel it was the most challenging during the middle of a “Capture the Flag” game, when you and your enemy are just one bound away from each other, the flag is in the middle and both of you still have pellets in your air guns. At that distance, you would need a lot of courage to either pop out your head and run to get the flag, knowing that painful and probably accurate pellets will hit you within seconds.
